Also, wear a mask. Our carpet is only a couple years old so there was hardly any stains, dander, or dust flying up.
A good tip, is to cut the carpet into manageable sizes that you can roll or take out of the room. Also, cut the carpet with your utility knife from the back. It will prevent all those carpet fibers from flying around the room. Joe did most of this part, then we loaded it up in his truck and he took it to the dump while I finished removing the carpet pad.
The one trick I learned, was using a shovel to remove the tack strips. At first I was using a pry bar, it was working well but taking up too much time. The shovel made it so much easier, I just hit it a couple times and the tacks were out.
I still had to use the pry bar to remove some of the nails, but this method was so much better. The shovel also helps with removing any glue residue on the subfloor. We finished DAY 1 at around six that night, had dinner and rested up for the next day. Side note: our backs, arms, knees and legs were killing us. The actual work is not hard, but all that up and down is hard on the body. We both quickly realized just out of shape we were. On the Pergo website there are many videos and detailed instructions on how to install the flooring.
As I mentioned the Pergo videos give all the instructions on exactly how to install the flooring. It was literally, laying down the underlayment and installing the floor right on top. It makes the install move along pretty quickly and easily.
Just like with any DIY project, you can read and watch as many tutorials as you want but until you actually start the project is when you will fully understand the process. It took Joe and I a few rows to get into the groove and understand how to use the leftover boards from one row to start the next one. It is also important to put an insulating layer below your underfloor heating that insulates more than the laminate. This way, heat is reflected away from the insulative layer and is conducted through the floor.
Floor cooling follows the same principles as underfloor heating, except it uses cold water instead of hot water. This prevents your floor from sustaining water damage. For floor cooling, a thermal resistance of less than or equal to 0. This means that in some cases, a minimal capacity loss is unavoidable. For the best results, we advise the combination of Pergo laminate with a Silent Walk underlay.
The general installation guidelines still apply, unless our specific guidelines for underfloor heating state differently. Not Helpful 2 Helpful 2. The underlayment provides a buffer and accounts for imperfections in the subfloor. Not Helpful 1 Helpful 2. Yes, but you will need to remove the cabinets, and then reinstall them on top of the flooring.
Not Helpful 7 Helpful 6. Our laminate is curling as we install each piece of Prego flooring, making it impossible to keep adding rows. What can we do? Curling happens when the floor isn't locking correctly.
Tap your planks tighter with a tapping block it is best to do this one at at time , since your floor isn't quite locked. This should help prevent the curling.
Not Helpful 2 Helpful 1. Use a tapping block and pull bar where the block won't fit, and carefully close the gaps keeping 8" from the edge of the plank. Lock either the short end or the long edge first, then tap the other into place.
The planks will flatten out as they are locked. Lifting the long side slightly 1" will help direct the plank into place if you've locked the short end first. The edges chip easily, so make sure your block is positioned correctly.
Not Helpful 0 Helpful 1. Can I leave the baseboard on when installing over hardwood and only remove the quarter round? Yes, you can. What you have described is a base shoe or quarter round over a base board.
Treat the base shoe as baseboard and leave the existing baseboard in place. Reinstall the base shoe over the flooring which is installed up the edge of the existing baseboard. Much easier than removing all. This also an alternative to removing a single existing baseboard, where you may install a base shoe or quarter round over the flooring cut and installed afterward.
