Students should consult their Program of Study for information regarding when the specialization field experience is slated. Engagement in practice with diverse cultural and racial groups and with groups who have been consistently affected by social, economic, and legal bias or oppression.
MSW Field Manual. Important Considerations. Full-time Employment and Field Education Students working full-time while pursuing their MSW should expect to significantly reduce or discontinue their work commitments to accommodate the requirements of practica.
The competing demands of practicum, coursework, and full-time employment tend to detract from the overall learning experience of field education. As such, it is imperative that students adjust their schedules in order to satisfactorily complete the field requirement.
Placements with evening and weekend hours are extremely limited. Professional Liability Insurance All students are required to carry professional liability insurance while participating in the field education program. Students must provide evidence of coverage to the Field Office prior to practicum start. As a courtesy, the Field Office provides information to students about obtaining professional liability insurance. Not having a car severely limits field placement options and can compromise student specialization interests.

Students intern at the same field agency for both fall and spring semesters on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday for a minimum of clock hours per semester. Concurrent with the field agency internship, students participate weekly in a field integrative practicum.
The seminar instructor, who is also the faculty field liaison to the agency and field instructor, monitors student progress in the internship through two on-site evaluations per semester with the student and the agency field instructor. That process, along with other information, is outlined during a field education orientation in early spring semester.
